There is no "blacklist" in South African credit. What exists is your credit record at the bureaux, and entries on it — defaults, judgments, missed payments — that lenders weigh when deciding.
What is realistic
An impaired record narrows your options and raises your rate. It does not close the door: short-term providers routinely lend to applicants with imperfect records, because they price for it. What no legitimate lender will do is ignore affordability — that is the law, not a preference.
Be wary of
- Anyone promising approval regardless of your record. Approval cannot be promised before affordability is assessed.
- Anyone asking for a fee upfront to "release" a loan. That is not how registered credit providers work.
- Anyone offering to clear accurate information from your bureau record. Accurate entries cannot be removed early.
What actually helps
Get your free annual credit report and check it — mistaken defaults and settled accounts still showing a balance are common, and you can dispute them at no cost. Then reduce what you owe and let recent good behaviour accumulate. It is slow, and it is the only thing that works.
